Overview
Typhoid fever is a bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It is spread through contaminated food and water, and is most common in parts of the world where sanitation and water treatment are less reliable. Symptoms include sustained high fever, headache, abdominal pain, and either constipation or diarrhoea. Without treatment, typhoid can lead to serious complications including intestinal perforation. The WHO estimates 11–21 million cases of typhoid occur globally each year, with 128,000–161,000 deaths. South Asia is the highest-risk region, but cases also occur across sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia, and parts of Central and South America. At Holborn Clinic, we provide the Typhim Vi injectable vaccine — a single dose that provides protection for up to 3 years. This is often given alongside other travel vaccines (Hepatitis A, Rabies, DTP) in the same appointment.
